Technical Assistance

The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), established in 1826, is the oldest continuously degree-granting college of art and design in the United States. Recognized nationally and internationally, MICA plays a crucial role in the creative economy, especially in the Baltimore/Washington region. As a private, non-profit educational institution, MICA is dedicated to cultivating innovative and socially responsible artists and designers. MICA’s wide array of programs cover various disciplines from traditional fine arts to digital media, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches, innovation, research, and community engagement.

The Energy Efficiency Initiative is a key component of MICA’s Carbon Footprint Reduction Plan which aims to lower greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent in the next two years. Harmonizing with a site master plan, it integrates sustainable practices with the historical and modern elements of the campus. The Energy Efficiency Initiative targets the improvement of energy performance across nine key buildings. FCI Technical Assistance funding will support engagement with Trane Controls, an energy solutions company to analyze energy consumption across the buildings, review systems operations efficiency, and ultimately provide a report of recommendations for MICA to implement in order to increase energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and extend the longevity of HVAC systems across these buildings. The initiative will also provide training to MICA’s staff in energy management practices.
