The Kitchen

New York, NY

Technical Assistance

The Kitchen is dedicated to offering artists opportunities to create and present new work within, and across, the disciplines of dance, film, literature, music, theater, video, and visual art. The institution produces around four visual art exhibitions annually scheduled in conjunction with 35 public programs and events featuring performances, literary readings, film screenings, and artists’ talks, attracting historically an in-person visitorship of over 20,000 annually. Additionally, The Kitchen’s Archive contains over 400 cubic feet of artist files and institutional history, posters, and audiovisual materials, and nearly 90 terabytes of digital and born-digital materials.

The Kitchen's building renovation project aims to create a more energy-efficient and sustainable facility by partnering with Stages Consultants and reviewing the importance of upgrading the Theatrical lighting infrastructure. A new LED theatrical lighting system, funded with a Technical Assistance grant will be more energy efficient than the existing halogen lighting system. When compared, the running power consumption of a Source 4 Series 3 LED fixture (307W) with a 750W halogen Source 4 with a typical color scroller (774W) can result in an estimated 60 percent reduction in power consumption per fixture. In addition, a single LED fixture can replace two or more conventional fixtures by its ability to change colors remotely. Conducting a comprehensive assessment of the building's theatrical lighting systems to optimize energy efficiency and performance, The Kitchen plans to implement a new theatrical lighting system and have Stages study and propose tech, electrical equipment location plans, and control riser diagrams depicting locations of performance and house lighting systems.
