Since 1984, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (MAC) has fostered an open view of contemporary art from multiple perspectives that converge in Puerto Rico: diasporic, Latinx, Caribbean-regional, and Latin American cultures within a global context. It is a collecting institution, a space of production and creation as well as of research and exhibition that encourages a constant dialogue between artists and audiences through cultural equity programs developed on and offsite. By advancing curatorial work, catalyzing the production of cutting-edge new artistic work and implementing innovative methodologies, the museum makes available to all types of audiences its cultural diversity, exhibitions and interdisciplinary programs. MAC's programmatic areas have reflected closely on land and environmental rights, sustainability in the face of the climate and food crisis, and the destruction of ecosystems and species often as the result of Puerto Rico’s territorial-colonial condition. This ongoing exercise has been done in collaboration with civil rights and environmental organizations.
The MAC has initiated strategic planning towards substantial capital improvements to ensure that the building can withstand climate change challenges and adapt to meet the functions and needs of its collections and audiences. It seeks to provide a properly controlled and stable environment for the long-term preservation of its collections and the historic Rafael M. de Labra building, a national architectural landmark. FCI Technical Assistance funding will support one of the key priorities, the in-depth evaluation and design of a new sustainable air-conditioning and ventilation system with solar backup energy sources. The project involves collaborative work with external consultants specialized in architectural preservation, collections management, energy-efficient operation of buildings and mechanical systems, and renewable energy solutions. The project outcome would be a mechanical design for a new environmental control system focused on sustainability, minimizing energy costs, and strategic planning for the upcoming implementation/construction phase.
