Founded in 2000, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR) is one of the leading arts and cultural heritage institutions in Puerto Rico. Our mission is to enrich the lives of our diverse audiences by making art accessible and promoting the knowledge, appreciation, and enjoyment of visual arts from Puerto Rico and the world. The museum serves the people of Puerto Rico and its countless visitors by welcoming all to experience art, creativity, and the broad Puerto Rican-Caribbean identity. The museum is a major player in developing Puerto Rico’s creative economy, promoting its art and artists in, and beyond the island.

MAPR is proactive in protecting its collection and that of other institutions from natural disasters by providing art storage shelter. Its partnership with the Museo de Arte de Ponce (MAP) exemplifies its collaborative spirit, enhancing its exhibition offerings and supporting MAP’s recovery from the 2020 earthquakes. The museum’s forward-thinking, climate resilience approach extends to its infrastructure, with plans to install a new energy monitoring system which FCI Catalyst funding will support. The first step in implementing this project was a six-month assessment of energy needs accompanied by a detailed proposal by the company Building Efficiency Experts, LLC (BEE). They proposed the replacement of our building automation system which consists of sensors, actuators, VFDs, and local microprocessor controllers, as well as our electric power meter since some of them are obsolete or damaged. The recommended update includes a remote monitoring platform via the internet that uses the most efficient operation of the automation and mechanical equipment 24/7. The efficient utilization of energy consumption signifies thousands of dollars in savings which can be directed toward public programming and new sustainable practices. In addition, the conservation of artworks is tied to maintaining the right environmental conditions which can be ensured with the right equipment.
