The Steven Myron Holl Foundation (SMHF) aims to inform the public about urgent issues in art and architecture, stimulate critical and theoretical exchanges of ideas in today's cultural, political, economic, and technological contexts, and educate new ways of thinking about the arts, design, and ecology. Founded by internationally acclaimed architect Steven Holl, SMHF's programs intersect the arts, design, sustainability, and ecology. The Foundation's initiatives include exhibitions, education initiatives, publications, and digital platforms.

Supported by an FCI Catalyst Grant, SMHF will install high-tech solar panels on the roof of its Architectural Archive and Research Library building to generate clean energy and move toward a net-zero energy goal at its facility. The grant will also support a small 3,600 square-foot arts building in becoming a full demonstration site for ecological architecture, in combination with previous sustainable interventions including a smart green roof, geothermal heating and cooling, recyclable aluminum cladding, high-tech operable skylights, local building materials, and ongoing environmental stewardship at its thirty-acre nature reserve. This project includes installing nine bi-facial Q CELLS solar panels, a Sol-Ark inverter, and a battery backup system. These additions will offset current energy consumption, reduce the carbon footprint, and provide energy cost savings that can be redirected toward arts exhibitions and programs.
