The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is an urban public research university serving nearly 35,000 students with programs in the sciences, arts, and humanities. The UIC College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts (CADA) includes various divisions, including the School of Architecture; the School of Design; the School of Art & Art History; Gallery 400, a contemporary art gallery located in the historic Formfit Building; and the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, one of Chicago’s oldest cultural institutions and a vibrant social justice center for the University and surrounding communities. Its collection is made up of more than 5,500 artifacts relating to the vibrant work of the Hull-House Settlement and the surrounding neighborhood.

UIC's School of Art and Art History is leading the project, "Building Climate Resilient Spaces for the Humanities: UIC’s Jane Addams Hull-House Museum & Gallery 400 as Sites of Heritage Justice." Supported by the FCI, the initiative will facilitate energy assessments for Gallery 400 and the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, providing a pathway to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. The project also supports UIC’s environmental and climate justice programs and advances environmental humanities through education and public programs. By creating a comprehensive, inclusive roadmap for climate resilience, the plan aims to reduce environmental impact and foster a climate-resilient future, educating SAAH students on ethical mitigation and adaptation practices.
