The Long Island Museum (LIM) is dedicated to inspiring people of all ages with an understanding and enjoyment of American art, history and carriages as expressed through the heritage of Long Island and its diverse communities. Incorporated in 1939, LIM vision is a premier regional destination where people of all ages can enjoy stimulating and rewarding experiences of authentic objects and compelling stories which bring to life the history, art and culture of Stony Brook, NY.
LIM is in the process of working towards vital improvements in the long-term environmental sustainability of the Art Museum, which turns 50 in 2024. LIM’s art collection is housed in the Art Museum and has over 500 paintings, 2,000 works on paper, and nearly fifty sculptural works from the late eighteenth century to the present. The collection is often used in a variety of regionally themed exhibitions that are supplemented with works borrowed from other museums, foundations, and private collectors. For example, in 2022, the museum hosted Two Centuries of Long Island Women Artists, 1800–2000, which featured the work of Helen Frankenthaler and a number of her contemporaries, such as Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, and Charlotte Park.
A 2023 FCI Scoping grant funded Grumman Butkus Energy Efficiency Consultants and Sustainable Design Engineers, to conduct an ASHRAE Level II Energy Audit. This resulted in the recommendation to improve the Art Museum’s building envelope to strengthen the efficiency of operating HVAC systems. As a result, a 2024 Implementation Grant will support replacing the Art Museum’s roof and insulation which will increase LIM’s energy efficiency and decrease emissions and energy costs.
