Technical Assistance

Founded in 1952 by civic leaders Howard and Arista Joyner, the Arlington Museum of Art (AMA) is dedicated to championing creativity and providing access to art for the educational enrichment and cultural development of our community. We foster creativity, conversation, connection, and community through the experience of art. We bring artists and audiences of all ages together to exchange ideas, share creative experiences, and spark meaningful encounters with art. The AMA's most valuable asset is the relationship and trust it has built with its communities through its education programs—the free Community Gallery, Youth Art Month, and free Summer Art Camps—reflecting the organization’s long-standing educational partnerships and commitment to nurturing life-long art lovers and the next generation of creatives. In March 2024, the AMA moved into over 40,000 square feet of exhibition space inside the Arlington Expo Center. This new footprint allows it to blend traditional, immersive, and interactive visual art to inspire and engage visitors locally, nationally, and internationally.

This Technical Assistance grant will help AMA build on an initial master plan at the museum’s new home at the Arlington Expo Center, and on a previous building and systems assessment. The current phase of the project supports an energy and sustainability assessment of the museum’s new facility, and the design of a new energy efficient LED lighting and corresponding control system. The assessment will evaluate existing energy use, building envelope, mechanical and electrical systems, and provide suggestions for increased energy performance with life cycle cost analysis, while serving as the basis for the museum's future Phase 3 expansion as laid out in the master plan. Following the report, final plans and specifications for a new lighting system will be developed for the museum space.
