The Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is an international craft school located on the Atlantic Ocean in Deer Isle, Maine. Founded in 1950 as a research and studio program in the arts, Haystack offers one and two-week studio workshops to participants of all skill levels as well as the two-week, Open Studio Residency program, exhibitions, tours, auctions, artist presentations, and shorter workshops for Maine residents and high school students. Serving an ever-changing group of makers and thinkers, we are dedicated to working and learning alongside one another, while exploring the intersections of craft, art, and design in broad and expansive ways.
Lighting in the school's studios is critical to the comfort and work of program participants. Upgrades to energy-efficient, modern lighting sources enhance the studios and experience of those in the studios and directly manifest the school's goals of being more energy-efficient throughout the campus, facilities, and its programming. Updating old fluorescent tube lighting with LED lights is energy-saving, which means cost savings, which is important and impactful for our nonprofit organization and budget. The upgrades also create a better working environment by removing the hum and flicker of the old tubes and enhancing the studio space and experience overall. The campus store is a high-traffic area supporting program participants and visitors to the campus, and the library—open 24/7 for participants all season—is regularly used for research, meetings, reading, and a quiet area for work. LED upgrades will also enhance these spaces.
