Proposal Instructions
Congratulations on your invitation to apply to the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation’s Frankenthaler Climate Initiative.
- The proposal you submit consists of two parts, with these components:
- 1. The online form (electronic cover sheet) submitted through the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative portal. This includes
- Institutional name
- Submitter’s name, position, and email address
- The request category (scoping, technical assistance, or implementation)
- The request amount (thank you for not exceeding the category ceiling)
- A 25-to-50-word description of the project
- Submission of proof of status as a 501(c)(3) organization, or through another institution that is one
- If a grant is awarded, that you agree to report on your project experience by providing the following
- A financial report of expenditures and a one-page narrative of project completion
- Building energy use pre-project and pre-COVID-19, and post-project 12 months after implementation, with a one-page narrative of energy and cost impacts.
2. The proposal attachment as a pdf document letter as a signed pdf document (instructions below)
- The proposal narrative (questions provided below) is limited to three pages of text in 11-point font (the one of your choosing) with at least .5” margins
- *Please use the naming protocol: “Institution_GrantCategory.pdf” (e.g., ICATacoma_Scoping.pdf)
- Please append to the narrative in the .pdf document
- An expense summary (described below)
- The appropriate 501(c)(3) documentation
- If available, any cost estimates directly related to the project (additional materials are not required or appropriate).
Narrative Instructions
- Please include the following, preferably in this order:
- A paragraph about the institution
- A paragraph about the visual arts collection
- Please describe the category of work this grant will support (scoping, technical assistance or implementation) and the activity.
- Include who will conduct the work (name, position and responsibilities) and the timetable.
- Please also include the expected impact on your organization. For example,
- If this is an assessment project, please describe what you hope to learn from the work.
- If this project will result in documentation leading to future work, please describe what level of documentation you are pursuing and what purpose it will serve.
- If this project is a renovation or replacement, please describe the anticipated savings in emissions and energy costs from the new efficiencies, and why you selected this approach.
- If this project is an expansion or added technology, please describe why this is an efficient or cleaner approach than other common approaches, and why you have selected it.
- If this is an assessment project, please describe what you hope to learn from the work.
- If this project will result in documentation leading to future work, please describe what level of documentation you are pursuing and what purpose it will serve.
- If this project is a renovation or replacement, please describe the anticipated savings in emissions and energy costs from the new efficiencies, and why you selected this approach.
- If this project is an expansion or added technology, please describe why this is an efficient or cleaner approach than other common approaches, and why you have selected it.
10. Please use the final paragraph of your proposal to indicate your willingness to share your experience with your peers after the project is complete and to allow your project description (subject to your review) to be shared with others as an example. The Frankenthaler Climate Initiative is committed to not only helping individual arts institutions to save money and reduce emissions, but also setting an example for the cultural sector and other funders. What you experience and discover during this project is important to us and will be helpful for the sector.
Expense Summary Instructions
- Please break down expenses, only, by permitting, professional services, construction, materials, equipment, software, and compliance efforts, etc. that sufficiently demonstrates your comfort with the project cost.
- Provide a brief justification note for an entry if it clarifies cost components, identifies types of equipment or services, or illustrates a cost calculation of time or materials.
- Please do not include overhead percentages. If staff time for project management fits within the category ceiling, this is an acceptable expense.
